GIS for telecommunications (telephone kiosk survey) in the UK

A request from BT to design and implement a GIS capable of handling positioning and descriptive data for it's stock of telephone kiosks included an urgent requirement for the delivery of 3000 records.

BT Payphones operate in excess of 140,000 telephone kiosks throughout the UK. An initial engineering requirement for a relatively simple database developed into a sophisticated model providing the means to identify suitable sites for the deployment of a range of other services.

Telephone kiosk surveying

National Grid co-ordinates accurate to 1m, digital photographs and the type of equipment installed were part of the original specification. In consultation with BT Payphones this was developed to include details of the site (e.g. type of neighbourhood, nearby shops, etc) and visibility information including sight distances and obstructions.
