Studying for possible scouring around the caissons supporting the new Severn Bridge, UK

The tidal ranges in the Severn Estuary are among the highest in the world. The associated strong currents cause very turbulent sea conditions around the bridge stanchions (Caissons) of the Second Severn Crossing (SSC) spanning the Severn Estuary near Bristol in the UK.

There was concern that the flow around the structures may cause scour of the seabed.

To provide an accurate base map, for future comparisons, a multibeam sonar survey was undertaken using a Seabat system. The aim of this original survey was to obtain 100% seabed coverage around the base of those caissons, which do not dry at low water.
